Schwerin is the capital city of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a state in northeastern Germany.

Water is a central part of the city's geography. There are eleven other lakes located within the city limits. These include the 3.0 square kilometer Brick Lake and the 2.1 square kilometer Lake Ostorf.
Schwerin has a deep history that began with Slavic roots. The name likely comes from the Slavic root "zvěŕ," meaning wild animal or game reserve. The settlement was first mentioned as Zuarina in 1018. In 1160, Henry the Lion captured the area from the Obotrites.
The city's political status changed many times over the centuries. It was the capital of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin from 1379 to 1815. When the dukes were elevated to grand dukes, it became the capital of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. This lasted until 1918. After the German Revolution and the fall of the monarchies, it became the capital of the Free State of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. It later served as the capital of the State of Mecklenburg and the District of Schwerin. After German reunification in 1990, it was chosen as the capital of the recreated state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The most famous landmark is the Schwerin Palace.
Schwerin survived World War II with relatively little damage. The city was hit by bombs on four separate occasions. The first attack in July 1940 caused only minor damage. However, a massive air raid occurred on April 7, 1945. This raid dropped 1,500 bombs and killed 224 people. Despite this, only about 3% of the city was destroyed. Because of this, much of the building structure remains intact. This includes the Altstadt (Old Town) and the Schelfstadt (Reed City) quarters. Following the war, U.S. troops took the city on May 2, 1945. It was later handed to the British and then to Soviet forces.
Today, Schwerin is a center for many different industries. Major employers include high technology, machine building, and healthcare. Government agencies and tourism also play large roles in the economy. The city is also known for its art and culture. The State Art Museum holds a large collection of 17th-century Dutch paintings and German art.
