The city's name has different possible origins. The city government says it means "swan" in the Jurchen language. Other sources suggest it comes from a Manchu word. This word means "a place for drying fishing nets." Originally, Harbin was a small rural fishing village. It grew rapidly due to the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway.

Harbin's history reaches back to the late Stone Age. Evidence shows human settlement in the area from at least 2200 BC. In AD 1115, Wanyan Aguda founded the Jin dynasty. He was from the Jurchen Wanyan tribes. Aguda established the Jin capital, Shangjing Huiningfu, in the Acheng District.

The city became an international metropolis during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Russian engineers and workers built the railway infrastructure. This made Harbin a base for Russian administration. The city gained a very European appearance. This was because Russian, Swiss, and Italian planners designed its streets.

Many different groups of people moved there. These included Russians, Ukrainians, Poles, Jews, and Georgians. In 1913, the city was home to 53 different nationalities. People spoke 45 different languages. This diversity made Harbin a unique global center.

Harbin faced a serious health crisis in the early 1900s. A pneumonic plague outbreak spread via the Trans-Manchurian railway. This epidemic lasted from late 1910 to spring 1911. It killed about 1,500 residents in Harbin. This event was part of a larger Manchurian plague pandemic. This pandemic eventually claimed 60,000 victims. Dr. Wu Lien-teh traveled to Harbin to investigate the disease. He gained permission to cremate the victims. This action helped stop the spread of the plague. His work changed medical progress in China.
