It helps kids get to school and school activities safely. These buses are owned or run by school districts. In North America, they have a very specific look. They are painted a bright color called National School Bus Glossy Yellow.

This bright shade makes them easy to see. It helps drivers see the bus during dawn or dusk. This color also stands out well against black lettering.

Buses have changed a lot over many years. In the 1880s, people used horse-drawn carriages called kid hacks.

These were often just farm wagons with no weather protection. They were slow and very bumpy for the children. In 1892, Wayne Works made the first "school car."

This design had a roof and wooden bench seats. It even had a door in the back. That back door eventually became the emergency exit we use today.

As engines replaced horses, the bus design grew. In 1917, the first motorized bus was made.

This was a big change from using mostly wood. In the 1930s, designers moved the door to the front. This helped the driver see passengers more easily. During this time, companies like Superior and Wayne also made all-steel buses. Some buses even used safety glass for their windows.

Making buses became more organized in 1939.

An expert named Dr. Frank W. Cyr held a big meeting. He wanted to create rules so all buses were safe. The group agreed on 44 different standards for the buses. These rules covered things like seat shapes and bus size. This helped companies make buses that were consistent and safe. Later, in the 1950s, buses grew even larger to hold more students.

Some buses even got wheelchair lifts to help everyone ride.

Today, many people work hard to keep these buses running. In America, there are over 175,855 bus drivers.

Drivers do more than just drive the bus. They spend about one hour every day at the bus depot. They must inspect the vehicle and fill out important reports. This work helps ensure that every student stays safe on their route. Engineers also work to make the bus bodies much stronger.
