This movie was made during a very busy time for gangster stories. In 1931, writer Ben Hecht wrote the script in just 11 days. Howard Hughes was the producer who wanted to make a huge hit. He hired director Howard Hawks to lead the project. Hawks and Hughes had even been in a legal fight before this. They decided to work together to bring this intense story to life. The film was based on a novel by Armitage Trail.

Many details in the movie are linked to a real person named Al Capone. The character of Tony Camonte is loosely based on Capone's life. For example, Tony has a scar on his face just like the real man. The film also shows a scene like the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre. This was a real event that happened in Chicago. Some people in the film even mention the Five Points Gang. These connections made the movie feel very real to people watching it in 1932.

Because the film showed so much crime, it faced many rules. A group called the Hays Office thought the movie made crime look too good. They made the creators add a new ending and a warning at the start. These changes were meant to show that being a gangster is wrong. Some cities even banned the film entirely. For a long time, the original version was hard to find. Today, we can see the film and learn about its place in movie history.
