The Saxons were a group of people from early history. They lived in a large area of northern Germany. This land was between the Rhine and Elbe rivers.

Some people think their name comes from a knife. This knife was called a seax. The Saxons were part of many different groups. They lived near the Franks and the Thuringians. They also lived near the Frisians and the Angles. These groups all spoke similar languages. They were all part of the West Germanic family.

In the beginning, the name Saxon was a bit different. It did not always mean one specific tribe. Instead, it described people who attacked by boat. These people were like the Vikings who came much later. They used boats to raid the Roman Empire.

These raiders came from lands near the North Sea. They included the Angles and the Jutes too. Some of these people moved to new homes. They settled in places like England and northern France. In England, they became the Anglo-Saxons. This group helped form the English nation.

History tells us about these people in different ways. A writer named Ptolemy might have mentioned them in the second century. His maps showed a tribe called Saxones near the Elbe river.

Some scholars argue about this old record. They wonder if the name was a spelling mistake. Later, in the fourth century, the name became very clear. Roman records show the Saxons were a real group. They were known for being very brave and strong. A historian named Zosimus said they had great courage. They even used boats to move around their neighbors.

Many years later, the Saxons in Germany faced big changes. They were not one single group at first. Instead, they were ruled by local leaders called satraps. This changed during the long Saxon Wars. These wars lasted from 772 to 804 AD.

A famous leader named Charlemagne fought them. He was the Frankish emperor. Charlemagne won the wars and took control of the land. He also made the Saxons follow Christianity. This turned Saxony into a single duchy. This duchy was part of the Holy Roman Empire.

Today, the Saxons are not a single group of people. You cannot find a country called Saxony anymore. However, their name is still very important. Many places in Germany use the name today. One large area is called Lower Saxony. Their old language also left a mark. It grew into Low German. This language was used for trade in the Hanseatic League. Even though it is less common now, it shaped how people speak. The story of the Saxons lives on in these names and languages.
