He was born on August 4, 1909, in Norwich, Connecticut. His family lived near a place called Taftville. His parents were Donald MacLane and Winifred Saunders. His mother was a teacher of English, Latin, and math. In high school, Mac Lane actually liked chemistry more than math. However, a math teacher named Lester S. Hill helped him. Hill coached him for a local math competition. Mac Lane won that contest and found his true path.

Mac Lane went to Yale University to study. He graduated in 1930 with a degree in math and physics. He even won a prize for having a great grade point average. Later, he went to the University of Chicago for graduate studies. He also traveled to study at the University of Göttingen. This was in Germany, and he studied with famous people like Emmy Noether. He finished his doctorate in 1934. Soon after, he married a woman named Dorothy Jones from Chicago.

Mac Lane did many different kinds of math work. In the 1940s, he worked on math for fire-control systems. This was part of a group at Columbia University. He also worked on things called group extensions and field theory. One of his biggest jobs was starting category theory. He did this with a man named Samuel Eilenberg in 1945. They looked at how different parts of math connect to each other. He also used diagrams with arrows to show how math objects link up.

He spent his career at many famous schools. He taught at Yale, Harvard, Cornell, and the University of Chicago. He even served as a department chair at Chicago for six years. Mac Lane was a leader in many math groups. He was the president of the American Mathematical Society. He also served on the National Science Board. In 1976, he even led a group of mathematicians to China. He wanted to see how math was being studied there.

Mac Lane loved to help other people learn math. He wrote books that made hard ideas easier to understand. One famous book was called A Survey of Modern Algebra. He wrote it with Garrett Birkhoff in 1941. This book helped students learn algebra using English. He also wrote a book called Categories for the Working Mathematician. In 1989, he received the National Medal of Science. This was a very high honor for his life of work. He passed away on April 14, 2005.
