The Sassoon family was a very wealthy group of people. They were a Baghdadi Jewish dynasty. This means their roots were in the Jewish community of Baghdad. They were involved in many different things like banking and finance. They also worked with oil, gas, and shipping. Because they grew so rich in Asia, people called them "the Rothschilds of the East."

The family's business worked by moving between many different lands. They started in Baghdad, in what is now Iraq. Later, they moved to Mumbai in India. From there, they grew businesses in China and Hong Kong. They also had many branches in Europe and North America. They used these paths to trade goods like opium and cotton.

The family story also includes helping people during hard times. Elias Sassoon was a very wealthy man in Egypt. He used his money to help Jewish refugees find safety. He helped pay for ships to move people to Israel. This was a very brave thing to do during World War II. The Sassoon family history shows how one group can touch many parts of the world.
