Human history on the island stretches back to the Paleolithic era. Some researchers suggest humans were present around 20,000 years ago. During the Neolithic period, new populations arrived and brought different cultures. One notable group was the Ozieri culture, which likely came from the Aegean. They built hypogeum tombs known as domus de Janas. Later, the Beaker culture arrived from Continental Europe. These groups established the foundations for the complex societies that followed.

The most famous ancient group is the Nuragic civilization. This culture flourished from the 18th century BC for many centuries.

They are best known for building nuraghes. A nuraghe is a type of round tower-fortress made of stone. Some were simple, but others became massive and complex monuments.

External powers have influenced Sardinia for thousands of years. Around the 9th century BC, Phoenician merchants arrived to trade.

They used ports like Caralis and Tharros to anchor their ships. Later, Carthage invaded and ruled parts of the island. Then, Rome conquered Sardinia in 238 BC. The Roman occupation lasted for 700 years. After the Romans, the Vandals and Byzantines held power. Eventually, the Iberian Crown of Aragon took control in 1324. This led to the formation of the Kingdom of Sardinia.

The political status of the island changed many times. The House of Savoy took control in 1718. During the unification of Italy, the territory became the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. In 1946, it became part of the modern Italian Republic. Today, the island is divided into six provinces and two metropolitan cities. Cagliari serves as the capital and the largest city. Sassari is the second largest urban center. As of 2025, the population exceeds 1.5 million people.

Sardinia is also a place of linguistic diversity. The indigenous Sardinian language is recognized by national law.

The Algherese dialect of Catalan is also an official linguistic minority. Other minority languages include Sassarese, Gallurese, and Tabarchino Ligurian. While some of these languages are considered endangered, regional laws provide protection for them. This blend of ancient history, unique architecture, and diverse languages makes Sardinia a unique part of the Mediterranean world.
