Some people think the name comes from a Tatar word. This word might mean "Yellow Mountain." Another idea is that it means "Boggy Island."

Long ago, the city grew into a busy shipping port. It was a very important place for the Volga Germans. These people lived there for over a hundred years. They had their own schools and churches. However, life became very hard for them during World War II. Many were forced to leave their homes.

The city also had a history with the Golden Horde. A city called Uvek stood near this site long ago. It was destroyed in the year 1395 by Tamerlane.

History shows that Tsar Feodor I likely helped start the city. He wanted to build strong places to protect Russia's borders. In 1708, the city was officially granted town status. By the 1800s, it was a huge center for trade. In 1870, the Ryazan-Ural Railroad reached the city. For 39 years, a special train-ferry carried trains across the river. A real railway bridge was finally built in 1935. This made travel much easier for everyone.

The name of the city may have several origins. One theory suggests it comes from the Tatar words "Sary Tau," meaning "Yellow Mountain." Another version suggests it comes from "Sar Atau," which means "Boggy Island."

The history of this location stretches back many centuries. Before the modern city existed, a city of the Golden Horde called Uvek stood nearby. Uvek existed from the mid-13th century until Tamerlane destroyed it in 1395. Modern Saratov likely began around 1590. This was during the reign of Tsar Feodor I. He built settlements along the Volga to secure Russia's southeastern border. The city was officially granted town status in 1708. By the 1800s, it had grown into a massive shipping port.

Transportation changed significantly as the city grew. The Ryazan-Ural Railroad reached Saratov in 1870. For 39 years, a unique train-ferry connected the two ends of the railroad across the Volga. This ferry service ended when a permanent railway bridge was built in 1935. During World War II, the city served a military purpose. It was a station on the Volzhskaya Rokada. This was a special military railroad used to supply troops and ammunition to Stalingrad. However, the city faced heavy attacks. German aircraft bombed the city between 1942 and 1943. They targeted the Kirov oil refinery, destroying 80% of the plant and its fuel stocks.

Saratov has a deep connection to the Volga Germans. In 1763, Catherine II issued an edict allowing German settlers to live in the Volga region. These settlers kept their own language, churches, and schools. They even established the Diocese of Tiraspol in Saratov. However, conditions changed after Catherine II died in 1796. The government began a policy of Russification. This caused some Germans to emigrate to places like the United States and Canada. In 1941, the situation became much worse. The Soviet government accused the remaining 400,000 Volga Germans of collaboration. They were deported to Siberia and Central Asia to work in labor camps. It was not until 1964 that they were officially cleared of these accusations.

Today, Saratov is a significant cultural and scientific hub.

The Saratov Drama Theater is also very famous. It was founded in 1802 and is one of the oldest national theaters in Russia. Another notable building is the neo-Gothic Conservatory. It opened in 1912 and immediately had 1,000 students.

The climate in Saratov is moderately continental. This means the weather can change quite a bit between seasons. Summers are hot and sunny. In July, the average daily temperature is near 23 degrees Celsius. During heat waves, temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius. Winters are very different. February is the coldest month, with average temperatures near -10 degrees Celsius. Snow and ice are very common during the winter months. You might see days that are above freezing and nights that are well below freezing in the same week.

Public life and movement are central to the city.

People use buses, trolleybuses, and a tram network to travel. The tram network is quite old, having opened in 1908. For long-distance travel, the Saratov Gagarin Airport serves domestic and international flights. Most of the population is ethnic Russian, making up over 92% of the people. Other groups include Tatars, Kazakhs, Armenians, and Azerbaijanis. This mix of people and history makes Saratov a unique place on the Volga.
