She often performed songs directly within her musical films. This allowed her to build a massive following through both visual and auditory performances. She recorded approximately 500 songs in five different languages. In some cases, she sang her own parts due to budget constraints. For example, in the film The Last Torch Song, she sang instead of using a professional dubbing singer. This helped her soundtrack albums become major hits.

Her career followed several distinct geographic stages. She began in Spain in the 1940s with films like Don Quixote. In 1950, she moved to Mexico to work during the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema.

Montiel's rise to stardom was marked by significant financial milestones. In 1957, she signed a contract with producer Benito Perojo to make four films. This agreement was worth ten million pesetas, which was about $240,000 in 1957. This meant she earned 2.5 million pesetas per film. At that time, the highest-paid stars only earned one million pesetas per film. Later, she improved her deals by securing twenty percent of a producer's net revenue. She also earned ten percent in royalties from her record sales with Hispavox.
