Sanxingdui

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sanxingdui is a major archaeological site located in modern Guanghan, Sichuan, China. It represents a unique Bronze Age culture that flourished in this region. Archaeologists identify this culture with the ancient kingdom of Shu. This civilization was distinct from other contemporary groups in China. It existed before the state of Qin conquered the area in 316 BCE. Today, the site is on the UNESCO tentative list of World Heritage Sites.

The site features a complex layout of residential, industrial, and religious districts. The city was built on the banks of the Yazi River. It enclosed a tributary called the Mamu River within its walls. The city was a trapezoid covering about 3.6 square kilometers. Its east and south walls were each 2,000 meters long. The west wall measured 1,600 meters. These walls were 40 meters wide at the base. They were surrounded by canals used for irrigation, defense, and flood control.

Discovery of the site happened in several stages over many years. In 1927, a farmer found jade relics while dredging an irrigation ditch. In 1934, David Crockett Graham organized the first official excavation. The most significant finds occurred in 1986. Local workers accidentally found sacrificial pits filled with thousands of artifacts. These items were often broken, burned, or ritually disfigured before burial. One pit contained approximately 800 objects. A second pit was found just 20 to 30 meters away.

Recent excavations have added even more to our understanding. Between 2020 and 2022, researchers discovered six new sacrificial pits. In March 2021, they found over 500 new cultural relics. This included a 3,000-year-old gold mask. This mask is made of 84% gold and weighs 280 grams. These new finds include traces of silk and bronze animal figures.

The metallurgy of Sanxingdui was highly advanced. The culture had a well-developed bronze casting industry. They created the world's oldest life-size standing human statue. This statue is 260 cm high and weighs 180 kg. They also made a massive bronze sacred tree. This tree stands 396 cm tall and features birds and flowers. Many bronze masks show exaggerated features like almond-shaped eyes. Some masks have protruding pupils and large ears.

These artifacts provide clues about ancient religious life. Many bronze faces show traces of black and vermilion paint. Scholars believe these colors were used in ritual practices. Some suggest the masks were used by a "shi," or ceremonial impersonator. These people might have worn the masks to represent ancestors. This helped the community connect with supernatural beings. Some masks might even represent the legendary first king of Shu, Cancong. He was described in ancient texts as having protruding eyes.

Sanxingdui is closely linked to the Jinsha site located 40 km away. Some experts believe Jinsha was the relocated capital of the Shu Kingdom. The two sites share similar gold masks and artistic styles.

While the Sanxingdui culture was contemporaneous with the Shang dynasty, its art was completely different. This shows that ancient China was home to many diverse civilizations. The end of the Sanxingdui culture remains a mystery. It may have been caused by natural disasters like floods or earthquakes. It might also have been due to an invasion by another culture.
