It is a vital center for transportation and commerce. The city connects to the city of Paraná via the Hernandarias Subfluvial Tunnel. A canal also links the city to the port of Colastiné on the Paraná River. This location makes the city a key part of the regional landscape.

The city functions as a commercial hub for a productive agricultural region. This surrounding area produces grain, meat, and vegetable oils. Education is also a major part of the city's identity. It is home to the National University of the Littoral, which was first founded in 1889. The city also hosts the Catholic University of Santa Fe and the National Technological University. These institutions make the city an important center for learning and research.

The history of Santa Fe began in 1573. A conquistador named Juan de Garay founded the first settlement. He led an expedition from Asunción to the Paraná River. This was the first Spanish settlement on the Plate in what is now Argentina. The original site was at Cayastá. However, the constant flooding of the Cayastá River made the location difficult. In 1653, the settlement was moved to its present site. The city became the provincial capital in 1814.

The climate in Santa Fe is classified as humid subtropical. This means the weather is often warm and moist. Summers are generally hot and humid. During extreme heat waves, temperatures have exceeded 40°C. Winters are usually mild, but temperatures can drop below 0°C on cold nights. Rainfall occurs throughout the entire year. The summer is typically the wettest season. Intense thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rain are common.

Flooding remains a significant challenge for the city. In April 2003, the Salado River rose almost 2 meters in just a few hours. This followed a period of heavy rainfall. The resulting catastrophic flood forced 100,000 people to evacuate. Large parts of the city stayed underwater for more than a week. The city has built various structures to manage its relationship with the water. A suspension bridge was completed in 1924, though flooding partially destroyed it in 1983. A second bridge, the Oroño, opened in 1971.

Santa Fe has a population of about 423,212 people. The larger metropolitan area has 653,073 residents. This makes it the eighth largest metropolitan area in Argentina. The city is well-connected to other major places by road. The Brigadier Estanislao López Highway links it to Rosario. National Route 11 connects the city to Buenos Aires. Travelers can also use the Sauce Viejo Airport for direct flights. These connections support the city's large population and economy.

The city has a rich cultural and sporting life. It hosted the 1990 FIBA World Championship for basketball. It also hosted the 2002 FIVB Men's Volleyball World Championship. Local football is very popular, with two first division teams: Club Atlético Colón and Club Atlético Unión. Many famous people were born here, including musician Ariel Ramírez.
