You can reach the city of Paraná by using the Hernandarias Subfluvial Tunnel. There is also a canal that connects the city to the port of Colastiné. This connection to the river helps the city stay busy. About 423,212 people live in the city itself. The whole metropolitan area has 653,073 people living there. This makes it the eighth largest area in all of Argentina.

The city works as a big center for trade and learning. It is a hub for a rich farming area. This land produces things like grain, meat, and vegetable oils. Many students come here to study at different schools. There is the National University of the Littoral and the Catholic University of Santa Fe. The city also has the National Technological University. These schools help people learn about many different subjects. Because of its history, lawmakers even met here for national conventions in 1949, 1957, and 1994.

Santa Fe has a very long and interesting history. A man named Juan de Garay founded the first settlement in 1573. He led an expedition from Asunción to the Paraná River. This was the first Spanish settlement in this part of the country. At first, the city was located at a place called Cayastá. However, the river flooded too often in that spot. Because of the water, the people moved the settlement in 1653. The city eventually became the capital of the province in 1814.

The weather in Santa Fe is often hot and wet. This is called a humid subtropical climate. Summers are usually very hot and feel quite sticky. You can expect rain throughout the entire year. Sometimes, summer storms bring very heavy rain and lightning. These heavy rains can cause the rivers to rise quickly. In 2003, the Salado River rose almost 2 meters in just a few hours. This caused a huge flood that forced 100,000 people to leave their homes.
