Rosario is the third-most populous city in Argentina. It follows only Buenos Aires and Córdoba in population size. The Greater Rosario metropolitan area holds about 1,750,000 people. The city serves as the head of the Rosario Department. It sits at the center of a major industrial corridor.

The city functions as a vital shipping and railroad terminal. It acts as the primary shipping center for north-eastern Argentina. The Paraná River allows large ships to reach the Port of Rosario.

Because of river movement, the port requires periodic dredging. Dredging is the process of cleaning out silt from the bottom. This process keeps the water deep enough for ships. The city manages a massive flow of agricultural and manufactured goods. The Rosario-Victoria Bridge connects the city to Victoria across the Paraná Delta.

Rosario's economy relies heavily on the export of many different goods. It exports raw materials like wheat, corn, and sugar.

Other exports include hay, linseed, vegetable oils, and lumber. The city also ships meat, hides, and wool. It processes these into manufactured goods like flour and meat products. This agricultural commerce is so important that it causes political debates. These debates often focus on taxes levied on large items like soy. The city's wealth is tied to these global trade cycles.

History shows that Rosario has no single official founder.

Originally, various indigenous tribes lived in the region. Some lived in reducciones, which were missions started by Franciscans. Later, Spanish settlers established estancias, or large farms. In 1724, Santiago de Montenegro began a formal settlement. He built a mill and a chapel. He was appointed mayor in 1751. The town was officially declared a city on 3 August 1852. At that time, it was called Pago de los Arroyos. This name means "land of the streams."

On 27 February 1812, General Manuel Belgrano raised the Argentine flag here. He did this on the shores of the Paraná River. Because of this event, Rosario is the "Cradle of the Argentine Flag." The National Flag Memorial marks this historic moment.

The city is also famous as the birthplace of footballer Lionel Messi. Residents also honor the "Virgin of the Rosary," their patron. Her feast day is celebrated on 7 October.

The city's population changed rapidly during the late 19th century. In 1887, the population reached about 50,000 people. About 40% of these residents were European immigrants. These immigrants brought new ideas to the city. This helped Rosario become a politically progressive place. In 1926, the population grew to 407,000 people. By that time, 47% of the residents were foreign-born. Many people arrived following World War I. The city also saw growth from new infrastructure. In 1911, a railway line opened to Puerto Belgrano.

Modern Rosario is organized into six administrative districts.

These are the Center, North, Northwest, West, Southwest, and South districts. A Municipal Centre of District provides services to each area. The city is governed by an executive mayor and a legislative council. The mayor serves a four-year term. The Council has 21 members. Half of these members are renewed every two years. The city also features diverse architecture. You can see neoclassical, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco styles in many buildings.
