In the United States, the name might mean certain horse flies. These are also called greenheads. In other places, the name refers to tiny biting midges. These small flies are sometimes called no-see-ums. They are hard to see because they are so small. It is important to know which fly is which. Each kind lives in different parts of the world.

Only the female sandflies bite living things. They bite mammals, birds, and reptiles. They suck blood to get protein. This protein helps them make eggs.

This way of making eggs is called being an anautogenous reproducer. When a sandfly bites, it leaves a small bump. These bumps are very itchy. The itchiness usually gets stronger for five to seven days. You can tell them apart from mosquito bites because they bite in groups. They attack animals in clusters.

Sandflies can carry germs that make people sick. Some flies spread a disease called leishmaniasis. In Asia, Africa, and Europe, flies called Phlebotomus spread it. In the Americas, flies called Lutzomyia spread it. These flies can also carry the Chandipura virus. This virus is a cousin of rabies and can be deadly. There was an outbreak of this virus in India in 2010. Another outbreak happened in Gujarat in 2024. Different flies carry different germs in different lands.

Some diseases from sandflies are found in specific places. Carrion's disease is found in the Andean areas of Peru and Ecuador. It is caused by bacteria and spread by Lutzomyia flies. In the Caribbean, places like Belize and Honduras have many sandflies. Travelers are often warned to use bug spray there. Another disease, leishmaniasis, can cause spiking fevers. Doctors can find it by looking at cells under a microscope. They look for tiny things called amastigotes. This disease can be treated with sodium stibogluconate.

There are many ways to stay safe from bites. You can use sprays with DEET or picaridin. Some people find that lemon eucalyptus oil works well too. Even sprays made for mosquitoes can help keep sandflies away.

In New Zealand, there are special stories about these flies. A Māori legend says a goddess created them. She wanted to get people moving in the beautiful Fiordland area. Another legend says the flies helped a hero named Ha-tupatu. These stories show how people have viewed the flies for a long time.
