Only the female sandflies bite. They suck blood from animals and birds. They need the protein in blood to make eggs.

Their bites cause small, itchy bumps. These bumps can feel worse for five to seven days. You can often tell them apart from mosquito bites. Sandflies often bite in groups.

Some sandflies carry germs that make people sick. They can spread a disease called leishmaniasis. This disease is spread by different types of flies in different places. In Asia, Africa, and Europe, flies called Phlebotomus spread it. In the Americas, flies called Lutzomyia spread it.

You can use bug spray to stay safe. Sprays with DEET or picaridin work well. Some people use lemon eucalyptus oil too. Even sprays made for mosquitoes can help keep sandflies away.
