history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Long ago, three groups lived in the southern part of Korea. These groups were called the Samhan. They were Mahan, Jinhan, and Byeonhan. Each group was made of many small towns. These towns had walls for safety.

Mahan was the largest group. It had 54 small states. One of these states grew to become the Paekche kingdom. Jinhan had 12 small states. It grew into the Silla kingdom. Byeonhan also had 12 states. These states became the Kaya confederacy.

The Samhan people used iron to make many things. This was a big change for them. Iron tools made farming much easier. People could grow more rice in the fields. The Byeonhan people were very good at making iron. They made iron armor and weapons. They traded these items with other lands. They even traded with Japan. They used iron blocks as money for trade.

Over time, these groups merged. They became the Three Kingdoms of Korea. The name Samhan is still used in the names of Korea today. It is a name that links the past to the present.
