She lived in Maine during the Cold War. This was a period of intense tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. During this era, both nations were developing weapons that could be launched from satellites in orbit. Many people were afraid that these technologies would lead to a nuclear war. Samantha became a famous figure because she used her voice to ask for peace. She was often called "America's Youngest Ambassador" because of her international outreach work.

In 1982, the Soviet Union had a new leader named Yuri Andropov. Most Western newspapers showed him as a threat to global stability. Andropov had previously been the head of the KGB, which is the Soviet secret police. He was known for suppressing people who disagreed with the government. When Samantha saw his picture in Time magazine, she had a big idea. She asked her mother if someone should write to him to ask if he wanted a war. Her mother suggested that Samantha should be the one to write the letter.

Samantha was ten years old when she sent her letter to Andropov in November 1982. She wanted to understand why relations between the two superpowers were so tense. Her letter was published in the Soviet state-run newspaper, Pravda. After receiving no initial response, she wrote to the Soviet ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Dobrynin. On April 26, 1983, she finally received a personal reply from Andropov. He invited her to visit the Soviet Union, and she accepted the invitation.

In July 1983, Samantha traveled to Moscow with her parents for a two-week visit.

She even performed the song "May There Always Be Sunshine!" with a new friend named Natasha. During a press conference, she told the world that the Russian people were "just like us."

Samantha's trip made her a celebrity in both the United States and the Soviet Union. In the U.S., some people were skeptical and thought her trip was a public relations stunt. However, she continued her work as a goodwill ambassador. In December 1983, she traveled to Japan to attend the Children's International Symposium in Kobe. She met with Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone there. In her speech, she suggested that leaders should exchange grandchildren for two weeks every year. She believed that a president would not want to send a bomb to a country where his granddaughter was visiting.

After her travels, Samantha moved into acting and writing. She wrote a book titled "Journey to the Soviet Union" about her experiences.
