Representing the Soviet Union, she became a global sensation during the 1970s. She earned four gold medals and two silver medals at the Summer Olympic Games. Her performances in 1972 and 1976 helped move gymnastics into the global spotlight. Before her rise, gymnastics was often viewed as a niche activity. Her energy and skill turned it into one of the most popular sports in the world. In 1988, she became the first person inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

Korbut’s athletic style introduced a new era of high-level acrobatics.

Previously, the sport emphasized balletic movements and graceful elegance. Athletes were generally older and focused on poise. Korbut changed this by introducing dynamic, risky maneuvers. She utilized her unusually supple spine to perform moves that seemed impossible. This shift moved the sport toward the athletic, acrobatic style seen today. Her success helped establish a trend toward smaller, more agile female gymnasts.

One of her most significant contributions was the creation of specific skills. The most famous is the Korbut flip on the uneven bars. To perform this, a gymnast stands on the high bar and executes a backflip. The athlete then catches the same bar from below during the under swing. She also performed similar flips on the balance beam. She achieved a flip from a standing position on the bar into a straddle position. She even performed a version that landed on her feet. While the bars version is now illegal due to rules against standing on the high bar, her vault remains in the official Code of Points.

Her journey began in Grodno, where she was born on May 16, 1955.

She started training at age eight and joined a Belarusian sports school at age nine. Her coach, Renald Knysh, initially found her to be capricious and lazy. However, he soon recognized her immense talent and charisma. By 1969, she was already making history in the USSR. She performed the first backward release move ever done by a woman on the uneven bars. At just 14 years old, she finished fifth in the USSR championships.

The 1972 Munich Olympics served as her most defining moment.

During these games, she won three gold medals in the team, balance beam, and floor exercise events. She also won a silver medal on the uneven bars in a very controversial finish. After her routine, the judges awarded her a score of 9.8. The audience was so dissatisfied that they whistled and shouted at the judges for several minutes. Despite the intense pressure, the judges did not change the score. This performance captivated audiences and brought her immense fame.

Korbut’s career faced challenges during the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

Soviet officials hoped she would defeat the Romanian prodigy, Nadia Comăneci. However, Korbut was dealing with injuries during these games. Her performances were considered sub-par compared to her previous work. She was overshadowed by both Comăneci and her teammate, Nellie Kim. Despite these struggles, she still managed to win a team gold medal and an individual silver on the balance beam.

After retiring from competition in 1977 at age 22, Korbut transitioned to teaching. She graduated from the Grodno Pedagogical Institute and became a teacher. In 1991, she immigrated to the United States due to concerns regarding the Chernobyl disaster in Belarus. She lived in New Jersey and Georgia before eventually settling in Arizona. She became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000. Today, she works as a head coach and a motivational speaker. Her legacy continues through the many gymnasts she trains in Scottsdale, Arizona.
