He is primarily celebrated for his romantic ballads, which are emotional and melodic songs. Adamo holds a unique place in music history due to his massive commercial success. He has sold more than 80 million albums and 20 million singles globally. This makes him the best-selling Belgian artist of all time. In the late 1960s, he was actually the second best-selling musician in the world, trailing only The Beatles. His music transcends borders, finding popularity in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, Japan, and the United States.

Adamo's musical journey began with a deep connection to literature and diverse melodic styles. He drew early inspiration from the poetry of Victor Hugo and Jacques Prévert. He also studied the music of Jacques Brel and French singer-songwriters like Georges Brassens and Charles Aznavour. These influences helped him develop his own style of composing and performing. His professional breakthrough occurred on February 14, 1960. He entered a Radio Luxembourg competition in Paris as both a singer and a composer. He won the contest with his song "Si j'osais," which translates to "If I dared."

Throughout his career, Adamo has mastered many different languages to reach his global audience. While he mainly performs in French, he has recorded songs in Italian, Dutch, English, and German. He has also sung in Spanish, Japanese, and Turkish. This linguistic versatility allowed him to tour extensively in places like Japan and various Middle Eastern nations. In Chile, his popularity was so great that he once performed in three different sold-out venues in a single night. He was even awarded the "Antorcha," or Torch prize, at the Festival de Viña del Mar.

Many of Adamo's songs have become timeless classics that other artists continue to interpret. His 1963 hit "Tombe la neige," meaning "The snow falls," is a prime example. In Japan, the version titled "Yuki Ga Furu" is incredibly significant. It has been covered by more than 500 artists and is considered the most popular Japanese Christmas song. This version even sits ahead of Bing Crosby's famous "White Christmas."

Another major success was "Petit bonheur," or "Little Happiness." This song sold over one million copies by April 1970 and earned a gold disc award.

Adamo's personal history is marked by both resilience and significant cultural shifts. He was born in Comiso, Sicily, on November 1, 1943. His father, Antonio, moved to Belgium in 1947 to work in the coal mines of Marcinelle. Salvatore and his mother followed him to the towns of Ghlin and Jemappes. As a child, Salvatore faced health challenges, including a year spent bedridden with meningitis in 1956. Despite these hardships, he remained a dedicated student and distinguished himself in the arts. His family was large, consisting of seven children in total.

His immense contributions to culture have earned him numerous high-level honors and titles. In 2001, King Albert II granted him the Belgian noble title of Ridder, which is similar to a Knight.

Additionally, he has served as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, visiting countries like Vietnam, Lebanon, and Afghanistan.

Even as he aged, Adamo's connection with his fans remained incredibly strong. In 2018, an estimated 50,000 people gathered at the Santiago airport in Chile just to see him.

Although health issues sometimes complicated his schedule, such as in 2004 and 2023, he continued to produce new work. In 2023, he released "In French Please!," an album featuring French adaptations of hits by artists like Elton John. His career represents a bridge between traditional French chanson and global pop music.
