Transitioning to the United States presented several significant challenges for Hayek. She faced a lack of acting roles specifically intended for Latin women. At the time, she had limited fluency in English and managed dyslexia, a learning disorder. To overcome these obstacles, she enrolled in English lessons and studied acting under Stella Adler. She also worked in various guest roles on television series like Dream On and The Sinbad Show. These early years required great determination to build a foundation in a new industry.

Her Hollywood breakthrough arrived through her collaboration with director Robert Rodriguez. In 1995, she starred as Carolina in the film Desperado. This film was a commercial success, grossing $25.4 million in the United States from a $7 million budget.

Her first feature as a producer was El Coronel No Tiene Quien Le Escriba. She also produced and starred in the 2001 television film In the Time of the Butterflies. This project was based on a book by Julia Álvarez about the Mirabal sisters. Through Ventanarosa, she has maintained control over the stories she chooses to tell.
