She is widely recognized for her unique approach to stand-up comedy. Her performances often explore social taboos and controversial subjects. These topics include racism, sexism, homophobia, politics, and religion. She frequently uses a satirical or deadpan style to deliver her jokes. In this style, she may have her comedic character endorse controversial ideas. This method invites the audience to reflect on the subject matter through humor.

Silverman's professional journey began with early stand-up performances in Boston. At age 17, she gave her first set, which she described as "awful." After attending The Derryfield School in 1989, she spent time at New York University. She did not graduate from university, choosing instead to perform in Greenwich Village. Her first major television role came during the 1993–1994 season of Saturday Night Live (SNL). She served as both a writer and a featured player for eighteen weeks.

Although she was let go after one season, she credits this experience with building her professional toughness.

Following her time at SNL, Silverman expanded into various television and film roles. She appeared in the HBO sketch comedy series Mr. Show from 1995 to 1997. In 1997, she starred in the independent film Who's the Caboose? alongside director Sam Seder. This film followed two comedians traveling to Los Angeles during pilot season. She also made her network stand-up debut on the Late Show with David Letterman in 1997. Her filmography includes roles in School of Rock (2003) and Take This Waltz (2011). She also provided the voice for Vanellope von Schweetz in the Disney films Wreck-It Ralph (2012) and Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018).

One of her most significant television successes was The Sarah Silverman Program. This sitcom debuted on Comedy Central in February 2007 and ran until 2010. The show featured fictionalized versions of Silverman and her sister, Laura. It reached an audience of approximately 1.81 million viewers. For her acting in this series, Silverman received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

She also won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards. This period highlighted her ability to use digital platforms to reach a massive, global audience.

Her personal history and background also inform her perspective.

Born in Concord, New Hampshire, on December 1, 1970, she is the youngest of five children. Her mother, Beth Ann, was a photographer and theater founder. Her father, Donald, was a social worker and a clothing store owner. Silverman is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, with ancestors from Poland and Russia. In 2010, she published her autobiography, The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee. She later adapted this memoir into an off-Broadway musical in 2022.
