Cruz was born on April 28, 1974, in Alcobendas, Spain. Her father, Eduardo, was a retailer and car mechanic. Her mother, Encarna, was a hairdresser and personal manager. She grew up in a household with two siblings, Mónica and Eduardo. Cruz describes her childhood as a happy time spent playing with friends. During play, she would often pretend to be different characters. This early interest in role-playing was a precursor to her professional career. She was raised in the Roman Catholic faith.

Before becoming a film star, Cruz focused heavily on dance. She studied classical ballet for nine years at Spain's National Conservatory. She also completed three years of Spanish ballet training. Additionally, she spent four years studying theatre at the Cristina Rota school. Cruz credits ballet with instilling a sense of discipline. This discipline proved to be a vital tool in her acting career. Her interest in cinema grew when her father bought a Betamax machine. This allowed her to become a cinephile at age ten or eleven.

Her professional journey began with several early challenges. After seeing a film by Pedro Almodóvar, she decided to pursue acting. She faced several rejections from an agent who thought she was too young. However, Cruz persisted and attended many casting calls. In 1989, at age fifteen, she won an audition against 300 other applicants. Her first professional appearance was in a 1989 music video for the group Mecano. She later hosted the Spanish talk show La Quinta Marcha between 1990 and 1991.

Cruz made her feature film debut in 1992 with the film Jamón, Jamón.

Her work with Almodóvar has been a major part of her career.

As her career progressed, Cruz moved into American cinema. She lived in New York for two years to study English and ballet. Her first American film was the western The Hi-Lo Country in 1998. A major breakthrough occurred in 2008 when she starred in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

For her performance in this romantic drama, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She received further Oscar nominations for her roles in Nine and Parallel Mothers. She has also appeared in major productions like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Beyond acting, Cruz has expanded her professional reach into other industries. She has worked as a model for brands such as Chanel, Mango, and Ralph Lauren. She has also served as a house ambassador for Chanel since 2018. Cruz even designed clothing for Mango alongside her sister, Mónica Cruz. She has also taken on production duties for films like Ma Ma and On the Fringe. Her career demonstrates a wide range of creative and commercial skills.

Cruz is also recognized for her philanthropic efforts and volunteer work. She has volunteered in both Uganda and India. During her time in India, she spent one week working with Mother Teresa. To support this cause, she donated her entire salary from the film The Hi-Lo Country. This act helped fund the mission of the nun. Her life reflects a balance of high-level professional achievement and a commitment to helping others.
