She is known for making large black and white photographs. Her work often shows people and places close to her. She takes pictures of her husband and her children. Her images often feel very special and deep.

Mann uses a very old way to make her photos. This is called the wet plate collodion process. First, she coats glass plates with a liquid called collodion. Next, she dips the plates in silver nitrate. She must take the picture while the plate is still wet. This makes the images look soft and dream-like. The photos may have small flaws or marks. These marks come from the old way of working. Some people say the images look like a dream.

This process creates a center of great clarity.

Mann began her journey into photography when she was sixteen. Her father, Robert S. Munger, first showed her how to use a camera. He gave her a 5x7 camera to use. She grew up in Lexington, Virginia. Her mother ran a bookstore at Washington and Lee University. Mann went to many schools for her studies. She graduated from Hollins College in 1974. She also earned a degree in creative writing in 1975.

She has published many important books of her work. Her book "At Twelve" was released in 1988. It shows portraits of young women. Another book is called "Immediate Family," published in 1992. This collection showed her own children. Some people had strong feelings about these photos. They argued about how she showed children. Mann said she was just a mother. She wanted to show her children as they grew.

Mann's work connects to many different parts of life. She has photographed battlefields from the Civil War. She also took photos of old, decaying houses. Her book "Proud Flesh" shows her husband, Larry Mann. He has a condition called muscular dystrophy. She used the wet plate process for those portraits. Her work can be both happy and sad. It shows the strength in people.
