Mann uses many old ways to make her art. One way is called the wet plate process. In this way, she coats glass plates with a liquid. She then dips them in silver nitrate. She must take the photo while the plate is still wet. This makes her images look soft and dream-like.

She has made many books of her work. Her book "At Twelve" shows portraits of young girls. Her book "Immediate Family" shows her own children. Some people found her work hard to look at. However, she said she was just a mother. She wanted to show her children as they grew up. She also takes photos of landscapes in the South. These photos show battlefields and old houses. Her work shows many parts of life.
