He worked as a stage actor, film actor, director, screenwriter, and playwright. He specialized in the boulevard theatre, a style of light, popular entertainment. Throughout his career, he was incredibly prolific, writing a total of 115 plays. His work ranged from historical dramas to contemporary light comedies. Guitry was a central figure in French culture for many decades.

Guitry followed a specific professional pattern as an actor-author and manager. He often wrote leading roles specifically for the actresses he married.

This allowed him to tailor characters to their specific talents. For example, he wrote musical and straight comedies for the singer Yvonne Printemps. He also frequently performed in his own productions. If a leading man fell ill, Guitry would step in to play the role. He became known as the definitive interpreter of his own written works.

His early life was deeply connected to the theater. He was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 1885. His father, Lucien Guitry, was a leading French actor. Sacha made his stage debut at the age of five within his father's company. He attended several schools, including the Lycée Janson de Sailly, before leaving formal education at sixteen. In 1902, he began his career as a playwright with a musical piece titled Le Page. By 1904, he was performing in his father's company at the Théâtre de la Renaissance.

Guitry's career saw many periods of intense productivity and success. Between 1911 and 1914, he achieved five consecutive hits, including Les Deux converts. He initially avoided silent films because he believed dialogue was essential to drama. However, he later embraced cinema with great enthusiasm. In 1936, he demonstrated his incredible work ethic by making five films and writing five plays in a single year. In 1931, his contributions to the arts earned him the Legion of Honour.

His stage productions often involved significant musical collaborations. For his 1925 play Mozart, he worked with composer Reynaldo Hahn. The production was a popular pastiche about the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In this show, Yvonne Printemps played the composer in a powdered wig and buckled shoes. Guitry played Baron Grimm, acting as a rhythmic accompaniment to her performance. The production was successful enough to tour London, Broadway, Boston, and Montreal.

During the Second World War, Guitry's career faced serious challenges. He continued to work in theater and cinema during the Nazi occupation of France. This led to accusations that he was collaborating with the occupying Germans. In 1942, he was even named on a list of collaborators to be tried after the war. He was arrested by a Resistance militia in 1944 and held in a detention camp at Drancy. Although the criminal charges were eventually dropped due to a lack of evidence, the experience left him disillusioned.

Despite these hardships, Guitry remained a significant cultural figure until his death. He returned to the stage in 1948 with the play Le Diable boiteux. He also performed in London in 1953 to celebrate the coronation of Elizabeth II. Guitry continued making films until 1957, when a nervous system disease affected him. He died in Paris on July 24, 1957. His popularity was reflected in the massive public mourning following his death. Approximately 12,000 people filed past his coffin before his burial in Paris.
