He focuses on weird and fantastic fiction. These are stories about strange or magical things. He spends much of his time studying the life of H. P. Lovecraft. He also looks at other writers like Lord Dunsany and M. R. James. His work helps people understand how these authors see the world.

Joshi does a lot of deep research for his work. He writes many different kinds of books. Some books are biographies that tell the life story of a writer. Other books are bibliographies, which are lists of every work an author made. He also edits volumes of stories for others to read. For example, he helped put together the Penguin Classics series. This series includes many weird stories by Lovecraft.

His journey as a reader began a long time ago. He was born on June 22, 1958, in Pune, India. His parents were Tryambak M. Joshi and Padmini T. Joshi. When he was four, his family moved to Indiana in the United States. At age 13, he found Lovecraft's books in a library in Muncie. He read a biography of Lovecraft in 1975. This book changed his life forever.

Joshi's love for these stories led to big choices. He turned down offers from Yale and Harvard. Instead, he went to Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He chose this school because Lovecraft had lived there. He has written many notable books over the years. One is called "I Am Providence," published in 2010. Another book is "Unutterable Horror," which came out in 2012.

His hard work has earned him special honors. In 2003, he won the IAFA Distinguished Critic Award. In 2005, he received a Special Award for Professional Scholarship from the World Fantasy Awards. He also stands up for what he believes is right. In 2014, he returned his World Fantasy Awards to protest a decision. He did this because of a campaign about Lovecraft's history of racism. Joshi now lives in Seattle, Washington.
