Rwanda is a country in Africa. For a long time, different groups lived there. These groups were the Hutu, the Tutsi, and the Twa. They spoke the same language. They shared the same culture.

In the past, leaders from other lands made rules. They gave the Tutsi more power. They gave people ID cards to label them as Hutu or Tutsi. This made the groups stay separate. It caused many fights.

In 1994, a terrible event called a genocide began. It lasted for about 100 days. During this time, Hutu militias killed many Tutsi people. They also killed moderate Hutu leaders. Many people died. Between 500,000 and 662,000 Tutsi were killed. Many women were also hurt.

A rebel group called the RPF fought to stop the killing. They were led by Paul Kagame.

The RPF won the war. This brought an end to the genocide.

Many people had to flee to other countries to find safety.
