For a long time, two groups lived there. They were the Hutu and the Tutsi. The Tutsi were a smaller group. They held most of the power. This was true even after Burundi became independent in 1962.

In 1993, the country held its first big vote. A Hutu man named Melchior Ndadaye won.

But the peace did not last. On October 21, 1993, army officers killed President Ndadaye. This was a coup. A coup is when the military takes control of a government. This event started a long civil war.

Fighting broke out between Hutu and Tutsi groups. Many people joined small groups called militias to fight. This war was very sad. About 300,000 people died. Many children were even used in the war.

Groups from nearby countries like Tanzania helped the rebels. The fighting lasted for many years. Finally, the war ended in 2005. A new leader named Pierre Nkurunziza took over.
