She spent her life working to make the law fair for everyone. She was born on March 15, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York. Her family was Jewish and lived in a neighborhood called Flatbush. Life was not always easy for her during her childhood. Her older sister, Marilyn, died when Ruth was only 14 months old. Later, her mother died just before Ruth finished high school. These hard times did not stop her from learning and growing.

She went there to research law and learned the Swedish language. In Sweden, she saw that women had much different lives and legal rights. She saw pregnant judges still working their jobs in court. This inspired her to fight for gender equality back in the United States. She became a professor at Rutgers and Columbia law schools. She was one of the very few women teaching law at that time.

Ruth became a famous advocate for women's rights. She worked with a group called the American Civil Liberties Union. She argued many cases in front of the Supreme Court. She won five out of the six cases she argued there between 1973 and 1976. She was very smart about how she picked her cases. Sometimes she even picked men to show that unfair laws hurt everyone.
