Rupi Kaur is a prominent Indian-Canadian poet, illustrator, and photographer. She is widely recognized as a leading figure in "Instapoetry," a style of poetry shared primarily on social media. Her work is characterized by its simplistic language and stark line drawings. These creative pieces often explore complex themes like South Asian identity, immigration, and femininity.

Kaur's creative process involves combining written verse with visual art. She often uses simple line drawings to accompany her poems. These illustrations frequently address intense or stark subject matter. For her first major collection, she wrote the poems entirely for herself. She did not have a specific book format in mind while creating them. She felt the poems only made sense when they were collected together as a single body of work.

Kaur has published three major collections of poetry. Her debut, *Milk and Honey*, was self-published on 4 November 2014. This collection achieved massive commercial success and was later re-released by Andrews McMeel Publishing. Her second book, *The Sun and Her Flowers*, was published on 3 October 2017. She described this second work as one long, continuous poem spanning 250 pages. Her third collection, *Home Body*, was released in 2020. This later work was influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and a desire to reduce commercial pressure.

Kaur's path to fame included a significant moment involving digital censorship. In March 2015, she posted photographs to Instagram as part of a visual rhetoric course at the University of Waterloo. The images depicted her with menstrual blood stains on clothing and bedsheets. These photos were intended to challenge societal taboos regarding menstruation. Instagram removed the images for violating their terms of service. Kaur wrote a viral critique of this decision, calling it an attack on her humanity. Instagram later apologized and restored the images. This incident significantly increased her popularity and followers.

Her early life in Punjab, India, deeply shaped her perspective. Born on 4 October 1992 into a Sikh family, she immigrated to Canada at age three. Her family lived in a small one-bedroom basement flat in Ontario. Her father worked as a truck driver in Brampton. During her childhood, poetry was a regular part of her family's spiritual life. She also began painting at age five at her mother's encouragement. These early experiences with art and language helped her eventually find her voice through writing and performance.

Kaur's career has seen incredible growth in terms of numbers. Since its 2014 release, *Milk and Honey* has sold over 11 million copies. Her work has been translated into 43 different languages. In 2018 alone, she earned nearly $1.4 million from poetry sales. However, her success has not been without challenges. She has experienced writer's block, burnout, and intense pressure to replicate her previous achievements. She has even faced book bans, such as in Utah, where *Milk and Honey* was restricted due to its sensitive material.

Today, Kaur's influence connects literature to modern social media culture. She uses her platform to discuss identity and personal trauma. Her work has received mixed critical reception, with some praising her influence and others criticizing her verse. Despite this, she has appeared on congratulatory year-end lists from the BBC and *Elle*. Some critics have even controversially called her the "Writer of the Decade." Her journey reflects the evolving way people consume and share art in the digital age.
