The museum operates through a vast network of research and exhibition. It manages a massive collection of over 18 million items. These items are organized into 40 distinct galleries. Scientists and experts use these resources for field research worldwide. The museum also conducts important conservation activities to protect history. This work ensures that delicate artifacts and specimens are preserved for the future. This combination of study and display defines its international reputation.

The cultural collections feature African, Near Eastern, and East Asian art. The museum also showcases extensive fine art and design. This includes clothing and product design, with a focus on the Art Deco style.

The history of the ROM began in the early 20th century. It was formally established on April 16, 1912. The Duke of Connaught, who was the governor general of Canada, opened it on March 19, 1914.

Originally, the museum was closely tied to the University of Toronto. It was managed by the university until 1968. At that time, it became an independent Crown agency of the Government of Ontario. This shift allowed the museum to function as its own separate entity.

Building the museum has involved several massive construction phases. The original 1914 structure was built along Philosopher's Walk. It was designed by architects Frank Darling and John A. Pearson.

A second phase opened on October 12, 1933. This expansion created an east wing facing Queen's Park. During the Great Depression, workers used local materials for this project.

The 1933 expansion introduced a neo-Byzantine style and an elaborate rotunda. This rotunda features a ceiling of gold back-painted glass mosaic tiles.

A major transformation occurred during the Renaissance ROM project. This project began in 2002 to modernize the institution. The government and Canadian agencies contributed $60 million to the effort. Additionally, Michael Lee-Chin donated $30 million to the cause.

The centerpiece of this project is the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal. This deconstructivist structure was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind. It was selected from 50 finalists in an international competition. The total cost for this massive renovation reached approximately $500 million.

The original building is recognized on the Municipal Heritage Register. Recent work continues through 2026 to improve the facility. These updates include expanded skylights for more natural light. They also include a reconstructed entrance plaza for street performances. The ROM remains a central part of Toronto's urban identity.
