The Royal Ontario Museum, or ROM, is a premier institution for art, world culture, and natural history.

The museum operates through a vast network of research and exhibition. It manages a massive collection of over 18 million items. These items are organized into 40 distinct galleries. Scientists and experts use these resources for field research worldwide. The museum also conducts important conservation activities to protect history. This work ensures that delicate artifacts and specimens are preserved for the future. This combination of study and display defines its international reputation.
Visitors encounter diverse collections that span the history of life and human creativity.
The history of the ROM began in the early 20th century. It was formally established on April 16, 1912. The Duke of Connaught, who was the governor general of Canada, opened it on March 19, 1914. Originally, the museum was closely tied to the University of Toronto. It was managed by the university until 1968. At that time, it became an independent Crown agency of the Government of Ontario. This shift allowed the museum to function as its own separate entity.
Building the museum has involved several massive construction phases. The original 1914 structure was built along Philosopher's Walk. It was designed by architects Frank Darling and John A. Pearson.

A major transformation occurred during the Renaissance ROM project. This project began in 2002 to modernize the institution. The government and Canadian agencies contributed $60 million to the effort. Additionally, Michael Lee-Chin donated $30 million to the cause.

The museum complex is a mix of different architectural eras. It includes the 1914 heritage building and the 1933 wing. It also features the 1984 curatorial centre and the 2007 Crystal.
