Roohangiz Saminejad was a significant figure in the early history of Iranian cinema.

She was an Iranian actress who lived from June 24, 1916, to April 3, 1997. Saminejad is most famous for her role in the 1934 film Lor Girl. This movie was a major milestone for the country. It was the first film produced in the Persian language. It was also the first talkie film in Iran. A talkie is a motion picture that includes synchronized sound. Because of this role, Saminejad became the first Iranian film star in a talking film.

Her path to stardom was quite unexpected. Saminejad was not a professional actress by training. She was actually the wife of an employee at the film company. The director, Abdolhossein Sepenta, was responsible for finding her. Sepenta had been searching for a specific look for his production. He had almost lost hope of finding the right actress. His discovery of Saminejad changed the course of Iranian film history.

The production of Lor Girl required specific adjustments due to Saminejad's background. She possessed a very strong Kermani accent. This accent came from the Kerman province of Iran. Because her speech was so distinct, the filmmakers had to react. They made necessary changes to the movie script. They did this to account for her specific way of speaking. This helped the dialogue feel more authentic to her character.

Saminejad's career in the film industry was very brief. After her success in Lor Girl, she only acted in one more movie. This second film was titled Shirin and Farhad. This production was also managed by Abdolhossein Sepenta. Despite her early fame, she did not continue a long career in the spotlight. Her presence in the industry was concentrated in these very early years of Persian sound films.

Life after her film career was marked by significant social challenges. The culture in Iran during that time was very conservative. Saminejad faced social ostracism because of her work as an actress. Social ostracism is when a person is excluded from a group or society. She also experienced sexual harassment from men while she was in public. These experiences were a direct result of her role in the cinema.

To protect herself, Saminejad had to make difficult life changes. She eventually changed her name to avoid recognition. She spent much of her life living in anonymity. Anonymity means she lived without her real name being known to the public. She also lived in seclusion. This means she lived a private life away from the general public. Her later years were a sharp contrast to her time as a famous star.

We can view Saminejad's life through the lens of cultural and political history. Historian Hamid Reza Sadr documented these details in his book, Iranian Cinema: A Political History. This text explains how her personal struggles related to the broader social climate. Her story shows the difficulties faced by women in early Iranian media. She remains a pioneer of the Persian talkie. Her legacy is tied to the very beginning of sound in Iranian storytelling.
