Players control an adventurer in a deep dungeon. The goal is to find a magic charm called the Amulet of Yendor. You must fight many monsters to reach the bottom level. You can find treasures like armor, weapons, and magic potions. These items help you stay alive.

Every game feels new. This is because of procedural generation. This means the computer makes a random maze each time you play. The monsters and treasures are also in new places. This makes every game a different adventure.

In Rogue, your choices really matter. The game uses permadeath. If your character loses all their health, they die. You cannot reload a save to bring them back. You must start a brand new game with a new hero. This makes every move feel very important. The game was made by Michael Toy and Glenn Wichman. It was so special that it started a new group of games called "roguelikes."
