He was an American producer and a leader in the arts. Being a producer means he helped bring many plays to the stage. He worked on more than 100 plays and musicals. Some of his most famous shows were West Side Story and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. He also liked to help new and adventurous writers share their work. This included writers like Harold Pinter and Tom Stoppard. His hard work helped many people enjoy stories and music.

Stevens was very good at many different jobs. Before he worked with art, he worked in real estate. He even worked on a Ford assembly line and at a gas station. In 1934, he joined a real estate firm in Detroit. By 1937, he had made a small fortune of about $50,000. He was part of a group that bought the Empire State Building in 1951. That building cost $51 million, which was a huge amount of money back then. He later helped develop land in Seattle through a company called Unico Properties.

He spent much of his life building important places for art. President John F. Kennedy asked him to help start a national center. This became the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 1961. Stevens served as the Chairman of the Board for this center for many years. In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson appointed him to lead a new group. This group was the National Council on the Arts, which is now called the National Endowment for the Arts. He was the very first Chairman of this group.

Because of his great work, Stevens received many special honors. In 1971, he won a Special Tony Award for his many shows. He was also put into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1986. President Ronald Reagan gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1988. That same year, he also received the National Medal of Arts. These awards showed how much people valued his help in the world of theater. He was a leader who made a lasting mark on American culture.

Stevens lived a long and busy life from 1910 to 1998. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, and went to school in Connecticut. He studied at the University of Michigan for one year. He was married to Christine Gesell Stevens, who helped animals through the Animal Welfare Institute. They had one daughter named Christabel. Later in his life, he faced some hard health problems. He died in 1998 at the age of 87 in Washington, D.C. His life showed how one person can help many artists thrive.
