Some poisons work after just one meal. Others take many meals to work. This is because rodents are shy about new food. They often sample a tiny bit first to stay safe.

One type is called an anticoagulant. These stop the body from using vitamin K. The body needs vitamin K to clot blood. Without it, the animal bleeds inside. Some are fast, but others take one to two weeks. This helps because the rat does not link the food to the sickness.

Another type uses metal phosphides. These work very fast, often in one to three days. When the animal eats it, the acid in its stomach makes a gas. This gas is toxic.

Some poisons use too much vitamin D. This causes hypercalcemia, which means too much calcium in the blood. High calcium can hurt the heart and kidneys.
