Clemente's professional path had many interesting turns. He started playing for the Cangrejeros de Santurce at age 18. The Brooklyn Dodgers later offered him a contract for $15,000. This included a $10,000 bonus. Because of a special rule for "bonus babies," the Dodgers did not keep him on their main team. Instead, they sent him to the Montreal Royals. The Pittsburgh Pirates saw his talent and drafted him after the 1954 season. He chose to wear number 21 because his full name had 21 letters.
