He served as the 31st Prime Minister from 1975 to 1984. Muldoon was a member of the National Party. He was known for having a very strong and sometimes aggressive personality. People often saw him as a leader for the "ordinary bloke." This meant he spoke for regular people against powerful groups. His style of politics was very unique in New Zealand history.

Muldoon's life began with many challenges. He was born in Auckland on September 25, 1921. When he was only five years old, an accident left him with a lopsided smile. His father died when Robert was a young man. During the Second World War, he served as a soldier in the army. He saw service in the South Pacific and in Italy.

While in Italy, he even studied to become an accountant from a tent.

He started his political career in the year 1960. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Tamaki.

At first, he was part of a group called the "Young Turks." These were young members who disagreed with the older leaders. He worked hard and rose through the ranks of his party. By 1967, he became the Minister of Finance. In this job, he helped introduce new coins and notes for the country.

As Prime Minister, Muldoon made many big changes. He started large industrial projects called "Think Big." He also created a system to give money to people when they retired.

However, his time in power was also very difficult. The country faced high inflation and many people lost their jobs. He also made choices that caused much disagreement. For example, he refused to stop a rugby tour in 1981. This led to large protests and unrest across the nation.

Muldoon's time in government ended after the 1984 election. He had stayed in power through several elections using a specific voting system.

Even after he left the top job, he stayed in Parliament. He later had a career as an actor to help pay his costs. He retired from politics in 1992 and died shortly after. His life remains a major part of New Zealand's history story.
