Robert Mills Gagné was a famous American educational psychologist. He spent his life studying how people learn new things. He believed that learning is not just one single thing. Instead, he thought there were many different types of learning. Some learning involves using your mind to solve math problems. Other learning involves using your body to perform physical skills. This idea changed how teachers plan their lessons for students.

Gagné created a special system to help teachers. He called this his Nine Events of Instruction. This system works like a step-by-step guide for a lesson. First, a teacher must gain the attention of the students. Next, the teacher tells them what they will learn. The teacher then helps students remember what they already know. After that, the teacher presents new information and gives guidance. Finally, the teacher asks students to show what they learned. This process includes giving feedback and helping students practice.

Gagné was born on August 21, 1916, in North Andover, Massachusetts. He went to Yale University and earned a degree in 1937. Later, he studied at Brown University for his higher degrees. During World War II, he worked with the Army Air Corps. He helped sort aviation cadets using special tests. He also worked at the School of Aviation Medicine in Texas. After the war, he held jobs at many famous schools.

Throughout his career, Gagné worked at many important places. He was a professor at Princeton University in 1958. He also taught at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1962, he wrote his famous book, "Conditions of Learning." He found a long-term home at Florida State University in 1969. He even worked with the US Air Force on research. His work helped people understand how memory works in the brain. He died on April 28, 2002.

Today, many people use the ideas that Gagné started. He was one of the first to use the term "instructional design." This means planning exactly how a lesson should work. His ideas helped people design training for computers and multimedia. Many modern teaching models are built on his foundations. Even though he lived many years ago, his work is still very important. He helped make sure that teaching matches how the human mind works.
