This theme of survival is found in almost all his work. He wanted to capture the spirit of different cultures.

Flaherty had a very special way of making his movies. He did not just visit a place to film. Instead, he often lived with the local people first. He wanted to become familiar with their daily lives. This helped him understand their stories before he started shooting.

His films connect to the way we watch movies today. His work helped lead to the word "documentary." This word was created by a man named John Grierson. Flaherty's movies showed that real life could be a great story. Even when he faced hard jobs, he kept filming. He captured the beauty and the struggle of the world.
