He lived during the 1600s and wrote over 2,500 poems. His most famous book is titled Hesperides. This collection includes his spiritual works called Noble Numbers. Herrick loved the beauty of the world and the joy of life. His poems often carry a message about making the most of our time. This idea is called carpe diem, which means "seize the day."

Herrick's poems cover many different subjects. He wrote about English country life and the changing seasons. He also wrote about village customs and his Christian faith. Some of his poems are short and use very few words. One example is a poem where he writes about passing away unknown. He also wrote poems to his friends and to various ladies. Many of the women in his poems are likely characters he made up. His writing style is known for being direct and very clear.

Robert Herrick was born in London in 1591. He was the seventh child in his family. His father, Nicholas Herrick, was a successful goldsmith. After his father died, Robert became an apprentice to his uncle. This uncle was a jeweler for the king. Later, Herrick went to study at Cambridge University. He graduated in 1617 and became a member of a group called the Sons of Ben. This group admired the works of the writer Ben Jonson.

Life was not always easy for the poet. In 1629, he became a vicar in a place called Dean Prior. However, the English Civil War changed things for him. In 1647, he lost his job as a vicar. He had to move back to London to live with friends. He spent this time getting his poems ready for a book. In 1648, he finally published Hesperides. Later, when King Charles II returned to the throne, Herrick became a vicar again. He lived in Devonshire until he died in 1674 at age 83.

Even today, people find great beauty in Herrick's words. His poems are often easier to read than other poems from his time. Many famous musicians have turned his verses into songs. One composer, Fritz Hart, wrote more than 120 songs using Herrick's work. Other famous composers like Ralph Vaughan Williams also used his poems. You can even find his ideas in modern stories and plays. His famous line about gathering rosebuds is still a very well-known saying.
