Henry Vaughan was a talented Welsh poet, author, and medical doctor. He was born in Newton by Usk in the Brecknockshire area.

His life was filled with many different roles. He wrote beautiful poems and translated books from other languages. He also spent many years practicing medicine to help others. Vaughan was deeply connected to the beautiful mountains and rivers of Wales. He even used the name "Silurist" to describe his writing style. This name honored the Silures, an ancient tribe from his home.

Writing was a way for Vaughan to share his deep feelings. Early in his life, he wrote many different kinds of poems. One of these books was titled Olor Iscanus, or The Swan of Usk. This work was written around 1648 but published in 1651. It used many unusual words and strange comparisons. The poems in this book reflected the hard times during the Civil War. Vaughan felt the effects of the war in his own community. He also wrote about his love for the countryside and nature.

Everything changed for Vaughan after a very difficult time. He suffered from a long and painful sickness. This experience made him think deeply about his life and his choices. He felt he had spent his youth in the wrong way. Because of this, he decided to change his path. He moved away from "idle verse" to focus on religious poetry. He adopted a special saying, "Moriendo, revixi." This means that by dying, he gained a new life.

George Herbert was a very important person in Vaughan's life. Although Herbert died in 1633, his poems changed how Vaughan thought. Vaughan read Herbert's work and became a devoted follower. His most famous book, Silex Scintillans, was published in 1650. This book was full of religious themes and spiritual ideas. He also wrote a book of prayers called The Mount of Olives in 1652. Some people believe his skill with words was even greater than Herbert's.

History shows that Vaughan lived through many big changes. He was born around 1621 and lived until April 23, 1695. He was the eldest child of Thomas Vaughan and Denise Jenkin. He had a twin brother named Thomas who studied philosophy. Henry married Catherine Wise in 1646 and had four children. After Catherine died, he married her sister, Elizabeth, in 1655. His life connects the world of art with the world of science. He remains a famous figure in Welsh and English literature.
