He spent much of his life in San Francisco. He was a key part of the San Francisco Renaissance. This was a group of many artists.

Duncan wrote many books of poems. Some of his most important books came in the 1960s. These books were called The Opening of the Field, Roots and Branches, and Bending the Bow. His writing style was very special. He liked to use myths and old stories. He also liked to use feelings and deep thoughts in his work.

Duncan was also brave. He was one of the first famous Americans to speak openly about being gay. In 1944, he wrote a famous essay called "The Homosexual in Society." This helped start a path for others to be honest too.

He shared his life with the artist Jess Collins. They took marriage vows in 1951. They lived together for 37 years. They even worked on art projects together. Today, people all over the world still read his poems. His work is found in many different types of books.
