Most people in Argentina and Uruguay use this dialect. It is also spoken in parts of Paraguay and eastern Bolivia. Some people also speak a related way of talking near the Brazil border. It is a very important way of communicating for millions of people. In fact, about 25 to 30 million people live in these areas.

This way of speaking has a very distinct sound. It has a rhythm and melody that sounds like Italian languages. This is because many people moved from Italy to this region long ago. They brought their own way of talking with them. This influence even created a special group of words called lunfardo.

The way people say certain sounds is also different. For example, they often breathe out a soft sound when saying the letter 's' at the end of words. This can make the speech sound very smooth and flowing.

History shows how this dialect grew over a long time. Spanish first arrived in the region during the colonial era. In 1776, the area became the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. Later, in the 1800s, the nations became independent. Between 1870 and 1965, huge waves of people arrived from Europe. Many came from Italy and Spain to live in these new countries.

These new neighbors helped shape the language we hear today.

There are many specific facts about how Rioplatense works. One major feature is called voseo. This means people use the word 'vos' instead of 'tú' for 'you.'

This also changes how verbs are pronounced. Instead of saying 'tú cantas,' a person would say 'vos cantás.' The stress moves to the end of the word. This is a normal and standard way to speak there. It is not considered a mistake by the people who live there.

Learning about this dialect helps us see how cultures mix. It shows how moving to a new place changes how we speak. Rioplatense Spanish also uses words from native groups like the Quechua and Guaraní. For instance, the word for popcorn can come from these ancient languages.
