Ringmaster (circus)

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A ringmaster is a very important leader in a circus. They act as a master of ceremonies to guide the show. Their main job is to introduce each new act to the crowd. They help the audience know where to look in the ring. A ringmaster also links different acts together during the performance. They might even talk to the clowns to make the show feel smooth. This makes the whole circus feel like one big, seamless event.

To make the show exciting, ringmasters use very big words. They use hyperbole to build up expectation for the crowd. They might call an act the "biggest" or "most amazing." This helps the audience feel the thrill of the show. In the past, ringmasters needed very loud voices. They had to speak over the noise of a brass band. There were no microphones or loud speakers back then. Their voices helped everyone hear the news about the next act.

The traditional outfit for a ringmaster looks like old riding clothes. They often wear a black top hat and a red tailcoat. This coat usually has bright gold trim on it. They also wear a waistcoat, a white shirt, and riding boots. Some might wear a bow tie or a cravat. A ringmaster might even carry a whip. This is a relic from when they directed horse acts. George Claude Lockhart first wore this style in 1928. He worked for Bertram Mills at the Olympia in London.

There are many famous ringmasters in history. Philip Astley is known as the father of the modern circus. He was a British master of horses. In France, people call the leader "Monsieur Loyal." This name honors Anselme-Pierre Loyal from the 1700s. Other famous names include P.T. Barnum and James Anthony Bailey. They helped start the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Johnathan Lee Iverson was the first African-American ringmaster for that circus. Even Norman Barrett is famous for his very long career.

Ringmasters are part of a long tradition of circus art. A woman in this role is called a ringmistress. She might wear a red blouse or a black skirt. Some ringmasters are also owners or artistic directors. This happens most often in smaller circus shows. Their style can even look like military uniforms. This look comes from the Royal Dragoons from Newcastle-under-Lyme. You might see this style in movies like "The Greatest Showman." It is a look that people still recognize today.
