They show off amazing physical flexibility to a live audience. This flexibility is much greater than what most people can do. These artists often perform to music in many different ways. They might join a circus act or a street performance. Sometimes they work with acrobats to create a beautiful show. Their incredible moves can make an audience feel wonder or shock.

There are different ways to move the body in contortion. Most performers are called frontbenders or backbenders. Frontbenders fold forward at the waist with straight legs. They might even put their legs behind their shoulders in a human knot. Backbenders bend their spines backward in many ways. They might do a head-seat where their head touches their buttocks. Some do a Marinelli bend using a post held in their mouth.

Others perform enterology, which means squeezing into a tiny box.

This art has a very long history in many places. Many traditions of contortion started in Asia. In China, records show it began during the Western Zhou Dynasty. This was between 1045 and 771 BC. It later grew during the Sui Dynasty from 581 to 618. In Mongolia, Buddhist Cham dances included these movements. Contortion is also similar to many poses found in Hindu yoga. These connections helped people see contortion as its own special skill.

Doing these moves requires a lot of hard work and strength. Some people are born with hypermobility, which means their joints move a lot. This can be helpful for contortion, but it can also cause injury. To stay safe, performers must do rigorous physical training. They build very strong muscles to keep their joints steady. A 2008 study looked at five contortionists using MRI machines. The study found some changes in their spines. However, many performers retire feeling perfectly healthy because of their training.

Today, you can find contortion in many different places. It is not just for the circus anymore. You might see it in a dance, a theater play, or a music video. Some performers do an adagio act, which is an acrobatic dance. In a rag doll act, assistants carry a performer to make them look limp. Some even use props like hula hoops or musical instruments. For example, Max Smith played the banjo while in contorted positions.

You can even find contortion clips on the internet today.
