Known by the nickname "Man of Steal," he was a left fielder who changed how the game was played. He was a master at being a leadoff hitter. This means he was often the first person to bat in an inning. His job was to get on base and then use his incredible speed to move around the bases. He was famous for his ability to steal bases, which is when a runner runs to the next base while the pitcher is throwing. People loved watching him because he was fast, skilled, and had a very fun personality.

To be a great baserunner, Rickey used many special skills. He often used a unique batting stance where he would crouch low to the ground. This helped make his strike zone smaller so he would not get out as often. Once he reached a base, he was always ready to run. In 1982, he set a huge record by stealing 130 bases in just one season. He also had a special way of catching balls in the outfield. He would sometimes use a "snatch catch," where he would flick his glove at the ball and then whip his arm behind his back.

Rickey's journey to the big leagues started in Chicago, Illinois. He was actually born in the back seat of a car on the way to the hospital on Christmas Day, 1958. He grew up in Oakland, California, where he played many different sports. He was a great football player and even had many offers to play in college. However, his mother advised him to focus on baseball instead. He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in 1976. He spent several years playing in the minor leagues, like with the Modesto A's, before making his major league debut in 1979.
