He served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. This court is a place where important legal decisions are made. He was even the chief judge of that court for seven years. Many people call him one of the most influential legal thinkers in the United States. He is known for having a very wide range of interests.

Posner uses a special way of thinking to study the law. He is a pragmatist, which means he looks for sensible ways to solve problems. He also uses economics to help him understand legal rules. This way of thinking is often called the economic analysis of law. Instead of only looking at old rules, he asks what a fair result would be. He believes that solving a dispute in a sensible way is very important. He often looks at how laws affect how people live and work.

His journey into law started a long time ago. He was born in New York City on January 11, 1939. He studied English literature at Yale University and graduated in 1959. After that, he went to Harvard Law School. He was the very first person in his class when he graduated in 1962. He worked as a clerk for Justice William J. Brennan Jr. at the Supreme Court. Later, he taught at Stanford Law School and the University of Chicago.

Posner has accomplished many big things in his career. He has written nearly 40 different books on many topics. These include law, economics, and even animal rights. He is the most-cited American legal scholar of all time. This means other writers mention his work more than anyone else's. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan nominated him to be a judge. He served on the federal bench until he retired in 2017. He was 78 years old when he decided to retire.

His ideas can be very interesting and sometimes surprising. He has written about many current events, like the 2000 presidential election. He also wrote about the 2008 financial crisis. Some people thought he was a conservative thinker. However, his views changed as he got older. He wrote rulings that supported same-sex marriage and abortion rights. He even had a blog with a famous economist named Gary Becker. His work helps us understand how law and money work together.
