His writing career lasted for fifty years. During this time, he created 143 separate titles. These included many different things like poetry, novels, and essays. He also wrote biographies and translated works from other languages. Aldington was a great reviewer too. He wrote reviews for more than 1,350 different books. He even wrote thousands of letters during his life.

Writing was a big part of his family life. His father was a bookseller and a clerk. His mother was a novelist who kept the Mermaid Inn in Rye. Their home had a huge library filled with many books. This helped Richard learn many difficult languages. He mastered French, Italian, Latin, and ancient Greek. He also loved hiking and collecting butterflies. These interests stayed with him throughout his whole life.

Aldington was a leader in a group called the Imagists. This group was part of the Modernist movement. The Imagists liked to use simple and clear words. They wanted to create poems with very sharp images. They also liked to try new ways of writing. Ezra Pound helped name this group of poets. Aldington's own poems made up a large part of their first big book. He even used ideas from Japanese verse in his work.

In 1913, Aldington married the famous poet H.D. They were both part of a lively group of writers. They met many famous people like D.H. Lawrence and Ezra Pound. They lived in London and talked about new ideas. However, their lives became very difficult during World War I. They lost a baby, which was a very sad time for them. The war also caused them to grow apart. They stayed friends even after they separated in 1938.

Aldington joined the army in June 1916. The life of a soldier was very hard for him. He lived in cold, mud, and dirt. He even had the job of digging graves. He saw things like gas on the battlefield. These experiences changed how he wrote. He wrote books like Images of War to show his feelings. Later, he became a famous critic and won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize.
